Dan Levin as born in Russia. He received his Ph.D. from The University of Chicago and served in the United States Marine Corps during the Second World War. He is a poet, novelist and biographer of Gorky (Stormy Petrel: The Life and Works of Maxim Gorky, 1985), as well as a translator of Russian poets. His novels include Mask of Glory, The Dream in the Flesh and Son of Judah. He has also written one play, May Day. As a Fulbright scholar, he taught in Korea for several years after his retirement from the C. W. Post Campus of Long Island University, where he has returned to teach creative writing. His most recent major publication is From the Battlefield (1996), a memoir of his experiences as a journalist in the Pacific theatre during World War II and its personal aftermath.
